Warning! Spoilers for Empyre #1 below!
Thor’s hammer Mjolnir is capable of downing the strongest villains in the Marvel Universe. But, when the God of Thunder threw his trusted hammer at the new king of the Kree/Skrull empire, it barely made a dent as Hulkling stopped the enchanted weapon with his sword.
Marvel Comics Empyre event features a surprise coalition by the longtime warring enemies, the Kree and the Skrull. While the two alien races have been embattled in a deadly war for a long time, they join forces under the lead of Hulking – who’s of both Kree and Skrull heritage. The former Young Avengers’ reasoning for accepting the role as the new leader of the surprising alliance is unclear, but the aliens have Earth in their sights which captures the attention of the Avengers.
In Empyre #1 by Al Ewing, Dan Slott, Valerio Schiti, Marte Gracia, and Joe Caramagna, the Avengers team up with the Cotati, a plant-like alien race who the Kree/Skrull are planning on making their next target. The Cotati were originally peaceful cohabitors on Hala alongside the Kree, but were nearly entirely wiped out by the Kree empire as many inhabitants were slaughtered in an act of war. When the Avengers encounter Hulking’s army, they swing into action. Thor whips his hammer into space which ends up being a direct shot at the new Kree/Skrull leader. However, instead of knocking Hulkling out cold, he throws up his powerful Excelsior sword and stops the hammer in its tracks.
How can a sword stop the powerful enchanted hammer? Hulking’s Excelsior sword has his own magical enchantments, as much like Mjolnir, it can only be wielded by certain people – in this case, descendants of the Dorrek Supreme. The sword is very much like Hulkling’s version of Mjolnir. It proved in this stunning scene that it’s capable of bringing the hammer to a full-stop.
Ultimately, while Hulkling is successful at stopping Mjolnir, which stunned Reed Richards, Tony Stark planted a device on the hammer that served as a virus, which breaks the Kree/Skrull firewalls and shield systems. The virus neutralizes the Kree/Skrull spaceships, leaving them powerless, floating in space. That’s when the true villains of Empyre are revealed, as the Cotati rise and make their intentions clear – they want vengeance.
Empyre #1 featured some shocking moments, with Hulkling’s sword being capable of stopping Mjolnir ranking near the top of them. If Thor wants to get to the new leader of the Kree/Skrull empire, he’ll need to figure out a new strategy to stop him, because simply throwing his hammer (even at full force) won’t be good enough to take him out. Although, Hulkling might not even be the Avengers’ biggest threat as it might be wiser to shift attention to the surprise villains, the Cotati.
