Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 goes official with significant upgrades

Samsung launched its first foldable smartphone last year in the form of Galaxy Z Fold, and while the device had some major issues with the display in the beginning, the phone was later relaunched with improvements & soon became one of the most popular foldable phones of 2019.

Then this year, Samsung launched another foldable phone named Galaxy Z Flip which was different from the Fold in the sense that it had a vertically folding display as opposed to the horizontally folding one as on the Galaxy Fold. Last month, we also got the 5G version of Z Flip named Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

Now, Samsung has launched the successor of Galaxy Fold, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. In short, this is the best foldable phone that you can get right now.

Samsung calls the “Hideaway Hinge” of Galaxy Z Fold 2 “The most advanced mechanism for folding technology”. Do you what other foldable phone has the Hideaway Hinge? It’s the Galaxy Z Flip. This means the Galaxy Z Fold 2 can not only open & close but also stand on its own at various angles, thanks to this hinge design.

Samsung went all out with the displays on the Z Fold 2 this year. Let’s agree that the Galaxy Fold of last year had a pretty ugly design when folded because the outer display had huge bezels on the top & bottom. But now, the bezels are way slimmer because the outer screen is bigger & almost reaches the edges. Samsung also replaced the notch on the inside display with a punch-hole. The punch-hole is there for the outer screen as well.

Another design change is that the camera setup on the rear now has a design similar to the one on Galaxy Note 20. So there is a rectangular camera module with triple cameras in it.

The phone also gets the Mystic Bronze color option like all the devices launched by Samsung at the UNPACKED event.

Talking about the specs, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 features a 7.6-inch display with Samsung’s Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) & it is a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel (1768 x 2208) with 120Hz refresh rate. Thanks to the LTPO technology, there is a variable refresh rate which means the display can refresh as slow as once or as fast as 120 times every second.

On the outside, there is a 6.2-inch Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2260 x 816 pixels. The refresh rate is 60Hz. Both the displays support HDR10+. Under the hood, there is Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ SOC & that also means the Z Fold 2 supports 5G. The phone packs 12GB LPDDR5 RAM & 256GB storage.

The triple camera setup on the rear includes a primary 12 Megapixel unit with OIS & f/1.8 aperture, a secondary 12 Megapixel ultrawide lens, and a third 12 Megapixel telephoto lens. The camera for selfies is the same for both displays i.e., a 10 Megapixel f/2.2 camera.

There is a 4,500mAh battery & support for 25W Fast Wired Charging, 11W Wireless Charging & Reverse Wireless Charging. OneUI 2.5 based on Android 10 runs out of the box.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 comes in two colors named – Mystic Black & Mystic Bronze. Samsung has not yet announced the pricing & the phone will go on sale starting September 1st.
